Click-Through Rate: Definition and Calculation

The click-through rate measures the share of recipients who click a link in your email. Here's how it's calculated, what it reveals, and how to improve it.

The click-through rate, or CTR, measures the share of recipients who click a link in your email. You calculate it by dividing the number of people who clicked by the number of emails delivered, as a percentage. It's one of the most telling metrics of a campaign, because a click is a deliberate act.

What it really reveals

The click rate is a stronger signal of interest than the open rate. Opening an email can be a reflex; clicking takes a decision. A good open rate with few clicks often means the subject line pulled people in, but the content or the offer didn't convince. Tracking this ratio tells you whether your message truly makes people want to go further.

How to improve it

Three levers act on the click rate. Relevance first: writing to the right person with an offer that concerns them. Clarity of the call to action next: a single, visible link that clearly says what happens on click. Consistency last, between the subject line, the content, and the link's destination. Piling on links, by contrast, dilutes attention and drags the rate down.

Frequently asked questions

How is the click-through rate calculated?

Divide the number of people who clicked by the number of emails delivered, then multiply by one hundred. Ten clicks on five hundred delivered emails is two percent.

How is it different from the open rate?

The open rate measures who opened the email; the click rate measures who acted by clicking. The latter is a far stronger signal of interest.

What's a good click-through rate?

It depends on sector and email type, but in prospecting a few percent is already fine. What matters is tracking your own trend.
